Bad Things Only Happen To Bad People

by Michael Gregory Steele and Herman B. Hayes

Apparently some of you had some trouble understanding the post I wrote the other day about the following quote given by Pat Robertson:
I’d like to say to the good citizens of Dover: if there is a disaster in your area, don’t turn to God, you just rejected him from your city
I mean it's pretty simple, God is going to remove his shield of protection from this city for embracing evolution instead of intelligent design. I really didn't people would have trouble understanding this, but apparently people cannot accept that God fully protects all of his followers that obey his word.

Part of the problem is that for years we've been subjected to the touchy-feely self-help notion that sometimes bad things can happen to good people. I've got news for all of you, good people are protected by the Lord and don't have to endure the same kind of suffering that bad people do. Just because you cannot figure out the particular sin that caused God to stop protected you that doesn't mean you didn't commit it -- Trust me, you did something wrong.

Now I've gotten a few emails from people countering my last post by citing the Book of Job. Yes, I know that Job was one of God's most devout followers and that God allowed a series of tremendous misfortunes to be inflicted upon. But God had a very specific reason to allow his family, his riches and his health to be taken from Job -- God needed to prove to Satan that Job would remain loyal to Him no matter what. Of course we all know that God won this bet and Satan in turn learned a valuable lesson.

Since God has already proven His point and there is no further need to "test" His followers through unspeakable tragedy He can focus His attention on punishing those who defy him. This brings me right back to my central argument: Bad thing only happen to bad people. So, Dover, watch out! You're angering the Almighty and you wouldn't like him when he's angry.

I can attest to your post. My son received a B in his American History class and God punished him with chicken pox. Some unbelievers - most notably the teacher - point out that the chicken pox occurred during the semester and that he was receiving an A before he was out sick. I, of course, point out to these dolts that God is all knowing and foresaw my son's failings, then took appropriate measures against him. I just can't believe that these heathens have the gall to suggest that God's preemptive actions have damaged my son's academic record and made it less likely that he succeeds in his life's missions. People who suggest such a thing are hurting the moral of all students and sending a dangerous message to underachievers around the world.

This is all rather obvious to me.

Bad things happen to bad people, and that's a given.

When bad things occur to good people, it points out they really weren't good, and that's God's secret way for helping out discern the evil-doers... those people weren't really good, and now we know.

And when bad things happen to actually good people, it's just God's way of testing us, proving we are still faithful.

What's there to doubt?

I agree Mr. Steele, I agree 100%. That is why all the women who get "raped" are bad people. They are either sexually promiscuous or they are just bad people. That is why God lets them be "raped."

I believe that following this logic, the men who "rape" women should not be punished... After all, how can we punish those doing God's work.

Many friends of mine died in Pearl Harbor. If you are blaming them for what happened then you'll burn in hell, with that pathetic lying weasel Pat Robertson. How coule anyone believe the 700 club after Jim Baker and his Bill Board faced ex-wife Tammy Faye

My buddies and I follow christians home after they leave church, then we beat and torture them. I like to fill my belly with their food, I call it Thanksgiving. I guess I'm an atheist doing the Lords work by causing injury to these sinful people.
See ya Sunday Mikey

And remember that when good things happen to bad people, it doesn't necessarily mean they were actually good, but simply more wily.

Though there are exceptions: some people, thought to be bad, to whom good things happen, can serve to prove to us that they were good people all along--for instance, our current President Bush, who proved, by having the good fortune of being voted into office, that his days of coke-sniffing, beer-guzzling, and being AWOL, were OK after all.

Ah yes. The hundred million people murdered by their own government in the last century must have all been bad people. The 500,000 Tutsis killed in a few weeks were all bad while the Hutus were all good (except the moderate ones who also died). The Jews? at least six million of them were very bad.

I second an above post: God is an asshole.
